Family Weekend

We recently hosted a Family Weekend which was attended by five families with burn-injured children, the event was held at the Fire Fighters Charity’s Jubilee House in Cumbria. Families were supported by 17 burn care professionals, which included Physiotherapists; Occupational Therapists; Nurses; Play Specialists, and Psychologists.

Two separate programmes were offered for the children and their parents. The parents’ programme included workshops on scar management, psychology sessions and relaxation strategies.  Parents were also offered complementary therapies by a certified therapist. The children’s programme included drama and crafts, swimming, and free play. Pool sessions were offered daily and included a family swim, adult relaxation and supervised pool time for children.

In addition, the programme was structured to offer the families plenty of opportunities to spend time together as well as get to know each other and have some fun. The group activities included a day trip to Walby Farm Park, Llama walking and music and arts workshops. The parents also had the opportunity to have a more formal dinner for adults on the Saturday evening whilst the children attended a kids party with a storyteller followed by a family quiz.

We hold these weekends three times a year and are immensely grateful to all the fabulous people who fundraise and enable us to continue to provide this invaluable weekend to so many people.

In addition to emergency grants given to families to help them with travel and other costs incurred when their child is in hospital, we have also recently provided sponsorship for burns camps and helped furnish a home following a devastating house fire.  Thanks to our regular supporter, The Claims Team, who sponsored one family to have an unforgettable day out to an aquarium over the Christmas period.

We can only continue to directly support families of burn injured children, work to prevent burns and scalds happening to children and provide support to rehabilitation programmes and hospitals with your help. Please get in touch if you’re able to help in any way.
