Nicole Lee takes on the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge in aid of Children’s Burns Trust

Nicole Lee Fundraiser

Fundraising is the life-blood of small charities, and teams like our own are only able to continue our work as a result of the energy, kindness and dedication of others. This Spring, specialist burns nurse and friend of Children’s Burns Trust, Nicole Lee is taking on the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge to fundraise for us. We asked Nicola to share her personal story and why she is looking forward to this fundraising challenge.

I have worked as a nurse in the speciality of burns for 15 years and I’m now the Matron of the Burns Service at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Lead Nurse for the London and South East England Burn Network.

In April I am taking on the two day, 106km Ultra Challenge in the Isle of White in aid of Children’s Burns Trust, joined by two friends and previous work colleagues Fiona Somerville and Judith Harriett.

The reason for taking on the challenge is to try to give something back.  I have seen the benefits of the Children’s Burns Trust family weekends for children and their families who have been through the experience of treatment for a burn injury and the impact that attending a burn camp has on the confidence of a child who has had a burn injury.

With a busy job and my own family commitments I don’t have the chance to volunteer to support the events so this is my way of trying to give back and I would love to raise enough money be able to support an additional family to attend a family weekend as an outcome of the challenge.

The NHS burn services provide amazing care and support to children and families who have had a burn injury; however the impact of this traumatic experience can have a lasting effect for all members of the family.

The ability to spend time away with other families that have experienced a burn injury, supported by burn care professionals can provide reassurance and have a really positive impact for the child, parents and siblings.

By completing the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge, I am not only hoping to raise vital funds but also highlight the importance of the work Children’s Burns Trust does to support children, young people and their families following a burn injury.
