Ann Mafura

Ann Mafura

When Ann was a toddler, she sustained a burn injury from a fireplace that affected the use of her hand. Growing up, she underwent several skin graft surgeries, along with regular exercises and splinting treatments to help release the tension in her tendons and improve movement. She thanks God and the amazing teams at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for their skill, care, and compassion, and for the fact that she has a hand she can use today.

What could have been a frightening journey was made easier by the kindness of nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, and the Children’s Burns Trust, who helped her understand her injury and stay positive through it all. Now, as an ambassador for the Children’s Burns Trust, Ann hopes to raise awareness about burn prevention and support other children and families going through similar experiences. “I’m grateful every day for how far I’ve come. Recovery isn’t just about physical healing, it’s about faith, strength, and finding joy again.

Tom

I’m Tom, and first and foremost, I am a father to two beautiful girls, Bella and Lily, and partner to their incredible mum, Alex. I am immensely proud to serve as an Ambassador for the Children’s Burns Trust.

Our connection to the charity began when Bella was nearly two years old and accidentally spilt a hot tea onto her chest. This led to full thickness burns, multiple surgeries, and ongoing scar management. We experienced firsthand the kindness, advice, and care the charity provides, and I became an Ambassador to give back to the organisation that supported our family through our toughest moments.

Beyond prevention, I hope that by sharing our story, I can encourage others – particularly dads – to see the benefit of opening up and talking about the emotional impact of childhood trauma.

Rachel Mumford

Rachel Mumford

Rachel is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who has worked alongside children, young people and families who have experienced a burn injury since she qualified as a psychologist. Rachel is passionate about promoting psychological care across all aspects of a patient’s journey and supporting psychological recovery in various ways to make meaningful difference to children and young people’s lives.

Rachel says: ‘It is a privilege to meet so many amazing children, young people and families in my work with the Pinderfields Burns Service. As a psychologist, I often spend time talking with people in a therapeutic space about their experiences after a burn; but alongside this I am aware of the importance of having the opportunity to meet other people who have been through a similar experience. This can be an incredibly powerful experience for children, young people and families. Working alongside Children’s Burns Trust and burns camps has been an absolutely vital part of this work and I am honoured to become an ambassador for the charity’.

Sidrah Waheed

At the age of 6 Sidrah sustained a burn injury to the left side of her body from a fireplace. Her personal experience has shaped who she is today and inspired her to pursue a career as a paramedic, where she dedicates her work to helping others in their moment of need. This led her to volunteer for the Children’s Burns Trust where she aims to provide children with the support and opportunities I wish I had had during my own recovery.

She understands how important encouragement, guidance and community can be in helping young burn survivors rebuild confidence and help them heal during their journey. “I hope to use my experience to reassure children and families that they’re not alone and that recovery is about more than healing physically its about finding strength, confidence, and joy again.”

Saff

Saffron Cohen

I am a burn survivor and NHS Psychotherapist.  When I was 4 years old I sustained 28% burns from my living room gas fire. Between the ages of 8-16 I was fortunate to attend annual Burns Camp where I had the opportunity to form a support-network with burn survivors who experienced similar challenges to myself. Peer-support from Burns Camps empowered me to develop self-acceptance and confidence following my injury.

I now regularly volunteer at Burns Camp, Burn Club events, and support forums for children, adults, and families. My experiences inspired me to undertake my BSc Psychology research project into the effectiveness of children’s burns camps and pursue a career in clinical psychology. I am passionate to continue supporting those affected by burns and highlight the effectiveness of burn-specific psychosocial support.

Charlotte Ranjar

‘I’m Charlotte, firstly mummy to little Oceania, the light of my life, and secondly a trainee English teacher. It’s an honour and a privilege to be an Ambassador for the Children’s Burns Trust. Oceania had an accident in December 2025 when she was 17 months old wherein she pulled a cup of boiling water down from the kitchen side. She experienced serious burns to her chest and arms. A week later, she developed suspected Toxic Shock Syndrome and was hospitalised. Thankfully she is doing well now and healing, but it had a profound effect on me.

I was diagnosed with PTSD and have been having therapy. I feel strongly that it is my duty to use our experience to help others, and also to try and prevent these kind of accidents. Burns are a lifelong injury and the healing process/aftercare is a part of our lives now. I hope that I can try to spread awareness, and do whatever I can to mitigate these kind of accidents occurring, and also support those who have experienced similar to us.’
