Emergency grant support for families

In the last 6 months Children’s Burns Trust has awarded 17 emergency grants to families affected by a burn injury.

A grant request is submitted by a burn care professional on behalf of a child and their family and following review by two of the charity trustees an award is approved to help the family.  Requests generally relate to support for travelling expenses to attend on going burn care appointments but have also been awarded to fund a new mattress, stair-gates and general living costs during an inpatient hospital stay.

For further information about emergency grant requests contact Jo at info@cbtrust.org.uk  or visit this page https://www.cbtrust.org.uk/about/grant-application/

Grant support for burns services

Last year Childrens Burns Trust supported 3 grant requests from a health care professional working in a burns service. Grant requests can be submitted for consideration by the trustees of support generally up to £500.  Further information is available from Jo at info@cbtrust.org.uk or visit this page https://www.cbtrust.org.uk/about/grant-application/

Children’s Burns Service, Sheffield

Kerry Nettleship, Advanced Occupational Therapist for Plastic Surgery and Burns at Sheffield Children’s Hospital contacted Children’s Burns Trust in 2022 to request support towards the cost of competing the British Association of Skin Camouflage Course.

Kerry said “I was very fortunate to attend the skin camouflage course in September 2022, which was partially funded by the Children’s Burns Trust.  Due to retirement within our team, the service would no longer have been provided to children and young people within our area. The course therefore provided me with the knowledge and skills to continue this work and support those living with visible differences.

The training provided the opportunity to meet with and understand the experiences of those living with skin conditions or scarring. It highlighted the importance of skin camouflage and how it can positively impact a sense of well-being and body image.

The course has given me the confidence to utilise skin camouflage within my workplace. I have seen the positive impact it has had on many of the patients I have seen within the clinic.  One patient expressed that since our skin camouflage session, she had the confidence to return to the gym which is something she had not done since her injury”.

Pinderfields Burns Service, Wakefield

The burns therapy team at Pinderfields Hospital contacted Children’s Burns Trust to request funding to buy a Meta Quest virtual reality headset.

Anne Sanderson indicated that “The virtual reality will be of great benefit to the patients at Pinderfields burn unit in Wakefield. This piece of equipment can be used to support therapy and encourage participation in rehabilitation. It is a good way to distract patients and allow rehabilitation to take place in a fun manner. We thank the children’s burns trust for the purchase of this piece of equipment on behalf of staff and patients.”

Morriston Burns Unit, Swansea

Ashleigh Jones, play specialist for burns and plastic surgery contacted us last summer to ask for help to purchase a sensory light for the children’s treatment room in the burn’s outpatient department.

The light is currently on order and will hopefully soon be in place in the newly decorated space themed treatment room.
