Urgent Grant Requests Doubled Last Year
The impact of a burn injury on a family does not often describe the many pressures for the parents, additional to the concern and anxiety for their child that has been injured.
Children’s Burns Trust offers an urgent grant to support children and parents struggling with the financial pressures following the impact of a burn injury.
A referral is made by a health care professional on behalf of the family using the online grant request form. Following review by the nominated trustees at Children’s Burns Trust a grant is then offered based on the detail within the referral, generally up to £250. Repeated grant applications can be made to support ongoing costs related to the child’s burn care treatment or scar management. We aim to manage a request in under a week to ease the financial pressure for the parents.
Support predominantly relates to travel costs to attend appointments at the specialist burn service, including parking charges. Replacement of belongings or general support in relation to the impact of a fire are also reasons cited.
Last year we received double the amount of urgent grant requests than the year before, recognising the challenges for families associated with the increased cost of living and the impact of an unexpected event in their lives.

In the summer of 2024, following the submission of an urgent grant referral from one of the burn psychologists we were able to provide support to a family whose 10 year old son had been admitted with 45% flame burns to the specialist burns unit, 180 mile round trip from their home.
The cost of petrol and hospital car parking for the family of six placed a pressure on them at a time when their focus needed to be about their son.
We provided three urgent grants over a six month period and we were also able to cover the travel costs for the family to attend a Christmas burns club event at an air museum, a much needed fun day out from the hospital.
