Grant donation supports burn survivor rehabilitation
A core aspect of our work at Children’s Burns Trust is to provide General and Urgent Grants requested by Specialist Burns Units to support families and the services they rely on.
We provide urgent financial support for families who are struggling with costs after their child has been burnt. This might be the cost of travelling to and from the hospital to visit their child or for attending on-going out-patient treatment or could be to replace items lost in a house fire. The grant request must be made by a health care professional on behalf of the family.
We also award small grants for rehabilitation equipment and sponsorship for children to attend burns camps. We can sometimes fund the cost of larger pieces of specialist equipment.
This year, thanks to an incredibly generous donor at the ASFP Awards Dinner, we were able to support the purchase of a Sparks Paediatric Chair for the Paediatric Burns Service at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
First patient benefits from the armchair
We received a general grant request for a specialist paediatric armchair from Amy Pilkington, Highly Specialised Physiotherapist at Bristol Children’s burns service last autumn which was then kindly funded by a donor at the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) awards dinner.
We are grateful to the donor who made it possible for the burns therapy team in the Paediatric Burns Centre for the South West, based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children to have their request granted to have support purchasing a Sparks paediatric reclining armchair. The armchair is used for inpatients admitted to hospital following a burn injury. The armchair will be used for children between ages 2 years-7 years which will target their most popular age group of children sustaining burn injuries. This age group can find standard chairs unsuitable due to their bulky dressings.
The supportive and reclining mechanism allow the chair to be used in the early stages when the children are ready to be spending time out of bed but may still be drowsy or fatiguing from regular theatre trips and unable to sit upright in a standard paediatric chair. The arm rests enable elevation and support of arms, important for acute oedema management of upper limb burns and the leg rest allows elevation of lower limbs. This chair allows early sitting out for burn injured children which is an essential part of their rehabilitation.

This chair will be vital in supporting the rehabilitation of burn injured children who are admitted to our burns service on Daisy Ward at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. In the early stages of rehabilitation following a burn injury, the children often require supportive seating to enable them to sit out of bed, eat their meals and play. Here is our first patient ever to use the chair!
The chair arrived in January and Amy has sent a photo (below) of their first patient who has used the chair. The team hope the chair will help many patients with their recovery journey.
