Family Rehabilitation Weekends 2025

Children’s Burns Trust have been providing family residential weekends since 2005, working in collaboration with the Firefighters Charity who enable us to use their fabulous rehabilitation centres.

Six families are invited to attend the weekend where the emphasis is on each family having the opportunity to spend time together, whilst also meeting other families who have been through a similar experience. The weekend is attended by staff and volunteers from the burn care services who support the weekend programme.

This year we have supported three family weekends including our first family rehabilitation weekend for families from the Southwest burn care services.

In April, we welcomed five families from across the Northern Burn Care Services joined by staff from Manchester, Sheffield, Alder Hey, Newcastle and Wakefield to celebrate the 20^th family weekend at Jubilee House in Penrith.  Starting at Walby Farm near Carlisle the weekend continued with visits from our usual favourites; Sunbeams music group, Taffy the storyteller and Zoobidoo animals.  The swimming sessions were reported as a firm favourite and the parents attended a scar therapy session and a wellbeing session, giving them time to talk to the staff and share their own experiences with one another.

We are grateful to the Worshipful Company of Fire Fighters who provided a grant to support this family weekend. 

In October we welcomed five families from the London and Southeast Burn Services to Marine Court in Littlehampton. The children enjoyed a visit to Littlehampton fire station, and the families enjoyed time together at  Fishers Farm Park and Littlehampton beach.  The swimming sessions were as popular as ever and entertainer Jonathon Cann, once again entertained the children and parents with his Punch and Judy show, magic and balloon modelling.

In November we ran the first family weekend at Harcombe House, the Fire Fighters Charity rehabilitation centre in Devon for six families from the Southwest and Midlands Burn Care services.  Staff from the burn care services across the two networks came together to support the weekend which included a visit from a small animal group, an opportunity to walk alpacas, swimming, craft, play sessions and the parent support sessions which were run by the psychologists and therapists. The parents, children, siblings and staff all talked about the benefits and enjoyment of the weekend which confirmed we are likely to be back in 2026 to do it all again.
