Jamboree Sailing

An annual event, the جامبوري brings together burn survivors and burn care professionals for a four-day fun-filled long weekend, this event provides a chance for children from all over the UK to build supportive and often long-lasting friendships. The Jamboree is designed to build confidence and self-esteem, being with other burn survivors and burn care professionals the children are able to deal more with their, often, life altering injuries.

This years Jamboree started on Saturday 22nd October and finished on Tuesday 25th October at Grafham Water Centre in Cambridgeshire. A smaller camp this year which included 24 children (8 – 13 year olds) and 13 supervising adults, attending from burns clubs in Bristol, Sheffield, Chelsea & Westminster and Chelmsford.

During the day, the children were split into three mixed groups from the various clubs and took part in a number of activities including, a 10mile bike ride around the reservoir, boat sailing, archery & problem solving, pioneering & orienteering and the Grafham challenge & high ropes. These activities help the children’s confidence, as well as developing their leadership skills and being able to work together in team based activities.
On the Saturday evening a trip to the Xtreme 360 Trampoline Park took place, where the children had a great time bouncing, twisting and somersaulting on the interconnecting trampolines; aided by the angled walls and padded launch platforms.
Sunday evening activities included a visit to the local swimming centre, where the children had sole use of the pool; much fun was had by all with not just swimming but playing with the float toys provided. Then everyone headed back to the Grafham Water Centre to finish off with a cinema evening.

The following day saw more activities taking place including disco’s and games for the children in the evening. Tuesday morning the children were able to participate in the last round of Grafham activities before heading back home after lunch.
